From an RFP Response to an End-to-End Partner

When an autonomous vehicle manufacturer needed network connectivity expertise, they turned to Telamon.

Telamon was invited by an autonomous vehicle manufacturer to answer a very specific RFP. The original request centered around logistics to procure products and deploy them. The client was building thousands of sites to house their vehicles, and needed help to sustain network operations for maintenance and repair. We were selected to do the work on the original request, and our relationship quickly grew into something much larger. The autonomous vehicle manufacturer was trying to manage its own network internally. As it turned out, the company was excellent at manufacturing autonomous vehicles; managing a network required an entirely different set of skills.

A Partnership Beginning

A week after awarding Telamon the work from the RFP, the manufacturer brought another project to us. They were trying to create a connection in a parking lot storage area for their vehicles, but struggled to locate fiber. Telamon was able to locate fiber at a location adjacent to where the manufacturer planned their storage lot, and recommended a possible solution that solved the connection problem. While the manufacturer didn’t ultimately opt into this plan, they were excited by the problem-solving our engineering team showed. So much so that we were invited to participate in building new networks for sites in another state.

In this work, we were able to deploy our full range of end-to-end capabilities—acquiring leases, construction, wireless, trenching, running fiber, installing APs, setting up cabinets, installing cables underground, and more. Where the manufacturer struggled to get permits, our site acquisition team accelerated the process. With our long history in the industry, we were able to use our expertise to get access to the right people, which ultimately put the permits in the manufacturer’s hands much more quickly than they would have been able to on their own.

As work on these sites progressed, the customer began to ask about other ways Telamon could help on projects. Telamon was tasked with the site and solution design and also implemented continuous deployment at these locations—ahead of doing the implementation. This centered the majority of the site work with Telamon, allowing us to find additional efficiencies on the front end—and soon, it began to grow to other markets as well.

Modernized Network Management

The new network provided greater efficiencies all around. Plus, our high-quality partnerships accelerated the process.

Decreased time to launch in new markets

Streamlined permitting processes

Centralized warehousing and created inventory reporting

Continued Growth, Continued Problem-Solving

As the relationship grew, we realized some locations didn’t have time to build a permanent site. Rather than be deterred, our engineers developed a temporary solution that didn’t involve going into the ground or drilling holes in walls—things that required permits. Instead, we built an access point attached to a metal plate, anchored by ballasts, and the site was connected. These temporary structures are sometimes allowed to exist for up to two years, which in this case gave the manufacturer time to iron out additional details while still moving forward with their plans. At the same time, we developed a way to provide low DC power to these units, so power didn’t need to be pulled into parking lots—a solution we repeated several thousand times.

Meanwhile, the manufacturer had been acquiring product in three separate warehouses, and that product was being misplaced. This impacted some of the work we were doing, with equipment not reaching construction sites on time, which extended timelines and cost money. We were asked by the manufacturer if we could handle warehousing their materials. With our depth of experience in 3PL, we implemented serialization, first in first out, and shipping inventory. Currently, Telamon manages 100% of this customer’s material for deployments in our Whitestown location. In some cases, Telamon also purchases on behalf of the manufacturer, keeping materials like cable extenders in stock at our warehouse.

This relationship grew from a simple RFP—clarifying logistics to procure products and deploy them—to this level of collaboration in just over a year and a half. At this stage, Telamon is tied to almost everything this manufacturer does, making us a complete end-to-end provider. We designed and built custom cabinets for the field, which incorporated modern edge computing devices, a telecom rack, plus appropriate heating and cooling units that are constantly monitored to maintain an optimal working temperature. We handle their upkeep as well, addressing all Tier 1 and Tier 2 alarms and working in conjunction with the manufacturer’s IT team.

As a result of our collaboration, the manufacturer has changed the way they approach the parking lot owners from the start, and includes Telamon at the outset. Together, we streamlined time to launch in new markets. And we centralized their warehousing and built a reporting tool to help them have better insight into their inventory than ever before. We view their success as our success, and are striving to find new ways to create efficiencies for them in the future. As a trusted provider with a seat at their table, we’re able to offer the complete spectrum of solutions and insights to help meet a wide variety of goals.
